The one ounce American Eagle was first produced in 1986 by the United States Mint. On the earlier bullion eagles, from 1986 to 1991, the date is shown in Roman numerals and from 1992 it is in Arabic numerals. The obverse is inspired by the design for Augustus Saint - Gauden's celebrated $20 which features the standing figure of Liberty. The reverse which was designed by Miley Busiek, depicts an Eagle carrying an olive branch and protecting its nest. The actual gold weight of the American eagle is ounce and the coin has a face value of US $50. With its appealing attributes for collectors and bullion investors, the American Eagle is one of the world's most popular gold coins.
