Description
When Queen Elizabeth II was crowned in 1953, the entrance to Westminster Abbey was guarded by ten fantastical creatures, The Queen's Beasts. Produced by The Royal Mint, this collection of ten 1oz gold coins is inspired by the ancestral beasts of heraldry, myth and legend that watched over The Queen throughout her extraordinary reign.
The reverse of the coin features the fearsome Red Dragon of Wales, designed by Jody Clark. Dragons are one of the best known mythical beasts. They are associated with strength, wisdom and power; these intimidating traits made the dragon a popular choice in heraldry. The dragon was mentioned in Welsh chronicles as early as the sixth century, interwoven with the legend of King Arthur and his father Uther Pendragon. But it is the Red Dragon of The Queen’s Beasts that came to represent the nation of Wales, as an emblem of Owen Tudor, Henry VII’s grandfather.
The obverse of the coin was also designed by Jody Clark and features Queen Elizabeth II’s fifth and final coinage portrait.
Struck in 24 carat gold (999.9 fine gold) and being exempt from both Capital Gains Tax and VAT, The Queen's Beasts collection is a popular choice amongst UK investors.
